Dabble-ing…

I’ve been pondering about dabbling…

The very fine art of attempting and immersing and “giving it a go” in pursuit of finding out whether you are … or you are not inspired by … whatever “it” is. Remember learning to ride a bike? Did you fall in love with cycling? How about climbing tree’s, did you later turn to Rock Climbing? And did your first swim turn you into a scuba diver? Perhaps you were one of the lucky one’s to find out dabbling lead to innate discovery, but most likely not.

What is it that allows us to move beyond all our firsts towards the few hobbies and interests we learn and later learn to love and thus hold onto for long periods of time? Sometimes a lifetime.

What aspects of human condition foster drive and commitment? Maybe the askew question is what conditions within the human environment limit our capacities for creativity and inspiration (such characteristics that cultivate passion)?

Broken down Dabbling is just so…. a pondering. Nothing more and nothing less. There should be no wasted time or reluctance in doing so as it only increases your chances for discovery and for finding the things you truly love and the things that were truly meant for you. Without it, without dabbling you might be pre-destined, pre-determined, even less prevented from enjoying curiosity in one of its raw, natural forms.

There are drawbacks however to this practice. Dabbling often lends one to small attempts and short lived experiences. These can been interpreted as negative side-effects and rightly so it can leave the Dabbler a bit puzzled on their path to passion. One can become accustomed to only scraping the surface of things….always leaving an escape route, never diving deeper to penetrate depth of the subject.

Caution should be given to the avid dabbler both towards adventure and misfortune and one might encourage the wayward soul to find kinship in their opposites; grounded spirits who held fast to early exposures and who’s motion presses them from one curious aspect to another. Dabblers and problem-solvers may share more commonalities than expected in their opposing habits; the one worrying to much about what comes next and the other fixating on what is. Perhaps the greater caution is in the dabbler’s abilities to keep pursuing, to keep meandering, to keep challenging themselves towards a desire to do what seems do-able. To release limitations and light their own fires no matter how long it takes.

Dabbling after all is an art.
